Two hundred and forty-eight students from across York-based South Bank Multi Academy Trust (SBMAT) joined together on Tuesday 11 June to take part in the Trust’s SportFest at York Sport Village.
This is the second time SBMAT has held the festival of sports and fun, which brings together pupils from Year 2 through to Year 10. Children from SBMAT’s six schools congregated to collaborate, champion and celebrate each other’s athletic achievements.
Pupils from Millthorpe School, York High School, Carr Junior School and Knavesmire, Scarcroft and Woodthorpe primaries, were watched by their families as they took part in bench ball, curling, boccia and dance competitions as well as some more traditional running, throwing and jumping events.
The children competed in York-themed teams – Foss, Minster, Ebor, Jorvik and Ouse – each made up of pupils from each of the six schools. Year 9 Sports Leaders from either Millthorpe or York High School led the activities through the day.
The event, which was sponsored by York Mix, culminated in a huge group dance and presentations to the winning team. Laura and Lee from York Mix’s breakfast show provided music, commentary on the athletics and fun games throughout the day alongside their mascot, Mixie the Monster.
Clare Hardy, SBMAT’s Associate Director of Personal Development and event organiser said: “We’ve all had a brilliant day at SportFest. Everyone has had fun, there has been lots of healthy competition and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching our talented pupils enjoy a whole host of sporting activities. It’s a real joy to give our pupils a chance to shine at such a large-scale event. They were all amazing!”
Chief Executive of SBMAT, Mark Hassack said “At South Bank Multi Academy Trust, our pledge is to make sure that children experience excellence every day so that they can achieve the very best outcomes – both academically and in their personal development. SportFest provides a perfect platform for personal development and for our Trust schools to collaborate and celebrate each other’s achievements.
“The children have put so much effort into the day and I am really proud of how all of our schools have come together. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has made SportFest possible, from our event organisers to our colleagues in schools and especially the pupils. We’re also very grateful to York Mix for sponsoring SportFest this year.”
SBMAT are now looking forward to their ArtsFest which takes place on Tuesday 9 July at York Barbican.
