Carr Junior pupils board the Polar Express

The Polar Express steamed into Carr Junior School earlier this week, marking the exciting launch of the school’s new whole-school English curriculum.

In a magical transformation, the school hall became a cosy train carriage, complete with the conductor ready to welcome everyone aboard. Each child received a golden ticket and embraced the spirit of the story by wearing their pyjamas and bringing along their favourite teddies and blankets – just like the characters in the festive film.

As part of the newly introduced English curriculum, the children have now embarked on wide and varied activities including writing verses for their own handmade Christmas cards, writing Christmas cracker mottos, creating labels or tags, making an advert, developing a narrative version of story, writing persuasively, preparing for and holding a debate, performing poetry and role playing.

Vicki Kerr, Principal of Carr Junior School said “We’re absolutely committed to bringing learning to life for our pupils and the festive season provides a wealth of opportunities to do this. This enchanting Polar Express experience sparked the children’s imagination and enthusiasm as they continue their journey into a world of writing, literature and storytelling. A truly unforgettable start to an inspiring curriculum!”

Carr Junior School is part of Excel Learning Trust, alongside Millthorpe and York High Schools, Inspire Academy and Knavesmire, Scarcroft and Woodthorpe Primary Schools, where the mission is to ensure that all children experience education excellence every day.
