The board of governors at Carr Infant School has announced their strategic decision to collaborate more closely with Excel Learning Trust (ELT), signalling an exciting new chapter for the school community. This decision follows the tireless work of the current headteacher, Dr James Canniford, who has been strengthening the relationship with the trust during his tenure and will be leaving the school at the end of the autumn term.
From January 2026, Matthew Oxley will take up the role of Head of School at Carr Infants. Matthew is currently Vice Principal at Scarcroft Primary School and previously served as Assistant Headteacher at Badger Hill Primary School. He will work closely with James McGann, ELT’s Executive Principal for Primary, to ensure a smooth transition and continued focus on high-quality provision.
Matthew Oxley said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Carr Infant School and look forward to working with staff, children and families to build on the school’s strengths. It’s a privilege to be part of this next phase and I’m excited about what we can achieve together.”
Mark Hassack, Chief Executive of Excel Learning Trust, commented: “We’re delighted to be supporting Carr Infant School at this important moment. Given that pupils transition from Carr Infant to Carr Junior at the end of year two, this partnership makes absolute sense and will help create a more seamless and coherent primary education experience for children and families.”
The governing body of Carr Infant School is also exploring the possibility of formally joining Excel Learning Trust in the future. This potential development is seen as a positive and exciting opportunity to strengthen leadership, collaboration and educational outcomes.
Charlie Crabtree, Chair of Governors at Carr Infant School, added: “We’re very grateful for the leadership Dr Canniford has provided and the amazing progress he has achieved. We are incredibly sad to see him leave but feel that this is an exciting time to strengthen our relationship with the Trust and in particular the Carr Junior school where our children continue to grow after leaving Infants. As a board we can see the benefits and opportunities that working with Excel Learning Trust will bring to our children, staff and wider community.”
